The future of corporates will be run by autodidacts, not business school graduates.

Youtube, masterclass, online training modules, etc. are the future of skill-based training and knowledge sharing, especially after the shift to virtual tools due to the pandemic. It is graduation season. Every third post on my LinkedIn is about someone getting into some business school almost every day. As much as I am proud of my friends for having cracked their CATs and GMATs, I also have a lot of friends  who pursued careers in the creative industries, given I did my graduation in liberal studies. Most of these creatives I know have bettered their skills during the college days, while attending classes of random subjects, giving exams. Most of them took mentorship from the seniors who were in the university clubs, and there were the others who went online for skill sharpening, making art, trying and failing, and trying in their hostel rooms. This made me realize that the tuition that the parents of these kids were paying was for the community experience of the university,...

Does a brand name have to have meaning?

Exploring how brands name; is there more to it than what meets the ear?   I wrote this piece while I was working from home because of the quarantine.  In my free time, I thought of starting a personal blog, to utilize the free time and channelize my creative energy into something. I began with the process of naming the blog. I reminisced over multiple names over days after I was done writing such pieces for Slangbusters. I filled a wall with post-it notes with names on it over the weekend and over time, I finalized something which did not matter as much. Now, I have a name, but there are no blogs in the Medium publication that I created with that name, and I sit here wondering, if only I had invested that much amount of time into brainstorming topics that I could write about, the idea of writing the blog would have solidified into something more than just a name. Names, huh. How did we begin naming anyways? Linguists have developed theories that suggest young ones were given n...

How analogies rule the world.

When you say "It's like…", "If you put it that way…" or "Think of it like this" you are using analogies to communicate better. Let's start this piece with a Vox documentary titled "some hospitals let a preventable infection kill their patients" No seriously, watch it.   It might not seem relevant to this piece yet, it will give further insight into how analogies can make it easier to understand the most complex of ideas. So you have watched this documentary (yay!) You noticed how they compared the approach towards the plane and car accidents with the approach that hospital officials have with patient deaths. With this analogy, they coined both the types of approach that hospitals take as plane crash hospitals and car crash hospitals. The argument that car crash hospitals make (see, I'm already using the analogy) is that it is a business and doctors are humans who make mistakes like everyone else, just the stake ...

An open letter to (the new) Facebook

The good, bad and ugly of the platform- from a brand owner's perspective. Dear Facebook, Voila! You have an awesome fan following. I mean, look at you, 2.41 billion monthly users (as of the second quarter of 2019). That isn't a small thing. And only shows that you are one of the biggest social media networks worldwide (Source: Statista). Ouch, then others just came floating by. 'Did you check out the new ad on Instagram?' or 'What does your pinboard look like?' I am sure you must have come across such comments on your platform. Did it hurt? Guess not. Because even though hundreds of hashtags are created every millisecond, so many tweets are published in the blink of an eye; you, my dearest, still win hearts of brand owners (mostly) across all industries. Over the years, you have turned into a personal, product and corporate marketing hub (now don't get too flattered). Your social graph is filled with CEOs, celebrities, entrepreneurs and start...
